UNIFIL Blames ‘Non-State Actors’ for Deadly Lebanon Attack

UNIFIL confirms "non-state actors" killed French peacekeeper and wounded three in Ghanduriyah attack during ordnance clearance operation. Macron attributes strike to Hezbollah as Lebanese Army promises investigation amid ceasefire fragility.

The UN Interim Force in Lebanon confirmed Saturday that “non-state actors” attacked a peacekeeping patrol in the village of Ghanduriyah, killing one observer and seriously wounding three others. The incident marks the most serious violence against UN forces since the ceasefire took effect.
The patrol was clearing explosive ordnance to re-establish links with isolated UNIFIL positions when it came under small-arms fire. French President Emmanuel Macron identified the fallen soldier as Sergeant-Chef Florian Montorio of the 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment and attributed the attack to Hezbollah, demanding Lebanese authorities arrest perpetrators.
UNIFIL’s cautious “non-state actors” formulation avoids explicit Hezbollah attribution while acknowledging armed group responsibility. The Lebanese Army Command condemned the incident, affirmed continued coordination with UNIFIL, and announced investigations to apprehend those involved.
The attack occurred in the Bint Jbeil area, where Israeli forces recently conducted intensive operations against Hezbollah positions. The timing—during a fragile ten-day ceasefire—tests the agreement’s durability and challenges Lebanese state capacity to enforce monopoly on armed force as required by the truce terms.
Macron’s direct accusation against Hezbollah contrasts with UNIFIL’s diplomatic language, reflecting French domestic pressure following troop casualties and Paris’s determination to hold militia leadership accountable. The incident threatens international support for the ceasefire if peacekeepers cannot operate safely in southern Lebanon.
