Iran Denies Planned Talks with U.S. Envoys in Pakistan

Iranian state and IRGC media deny planned Araghchi-Witkoff-Kushner meetings, framing Pakistan visit as position-conveyance rather than negotiation. Contradiction of Trump's envoy dispatch exposes deepening impasse as both sides reject opposing preconditions for substantive talks.

Iran’s state news agency IRNA and IRGC-affiliated Tasnim both denied Thursday that any direct meetings are planned between Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The reports contradict President Trump’s announcement that representatives would travel to Islamabad for negotiations.
IRNA stated Araghchi is visiting Pakistan solely to convey Iran’s position regarding the current war status, not to engage in bilateral diplomacy. Tasnim reinforced this position, emphasizing no direct talks with U.S. officials are scheduled at present.
The denial exposes significant disconnect between American and Iranian assessments of negotiation status. Trump claimed Friday that Iran had “agreed to everything” and dispatched Witkoff for Monday arrival; Tehran’s explicit rejection suggests either deliberate deception, misinterpretation of exploratory contacts, or rapid hardline reversal following internal deliberations.
Araghchi’s Pakistan visit—framed as declaratory rather than negotiatory—aligns with Parliamentary Speaker Ghalibaf’s earlier rejection of talks under blockade pressure and threats of “new cards on the battlefield.” Iranian leadership appears unified in demanding cessation of American coercion before substantive engagement can resume.
The impasse leaves indefinite ceasefire extension without clear pathway to resolution. Trump’s blockade inflicts approximately $400 million daily losses while Iran’s mine deployments and vessel attacks demonstrate retained asymmetric capabilities. Neither side currently accepts the other’s precondition for talks: Washington demands uranium removal and Hormuz opening; Tehran insists on pressure cessation and sanctions relief.
Pakistani mediation, which successfully extracted initial ceasefire and extension, now faces fundamental obstacle as both capitals harden positions rather than bridge gaps.
