French Soldier Killed in UNIFIL Attack in Lebanon

French paratrooper killed in Hezbollah-attributed attack on UNIFIL in southern Lebanon, with three wounded. Macron demands Lebanese authorities arrest perpetrators and assume responsibility alongside peacekeeping forces as ceasefire faces first major test.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced Saturday that Sergeant-Chef Florian Montorio of the 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment was killed in southern Lebanon during an attack against UNIFIL peacekeeping forces. Three additional French soldiers were wounded and evacuated following the incident.
Macron stated that “everything suggests” Hezbollah bears responsibility for the attack, which occurred amid the fragile ten-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. The French President demanded Lebanese authorities “immediately arrest the perpetrators and take responsibility alongside UNIFIL.”
The death marks the first fatal attack on international peacekeeping forces since the ceasefire took effect April 16, testing the agreement’s durability and raising questions about Hezbollah compliance with cessation of hostilities. Montorio, from Montauban, was serving with French forces deployed to the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon.
The incident places additional pressure on the Lebanese government to assert state authority over armed groups within its territory, a core provision of the ceasefire agreement that designates Lebanese security forces as sole legitimate armed actors. Macron’s explicit attribution to Hezbollah challenges the militia’s posture and Lebanese state capacity to enforce compliance.
France maintains approximately 700 troops with UNIFIL, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, charged with monitoring the cessation of hostilities and supporting Lebanese armed forces. The attack on peacekeepers represents significant escalation threatening international support for the nascent truce.
