Taiwan has officially commissioned its first battalion of U.S.-built M1A2T Abrams tanks, marking a significant milestone in its military modernization and a direct message to Beijing. In a ceremony on Friday, October 31, 2025, at the Hukou military base, President Lai Ching-te presided over the activation of the 3rd Combined Arms Battalion of the 584th Armored Brigade.
The activation is the first tangible result of a $2.22 billion arms deal finalized with the U.S. in 2019 for a total of 108 Abrams tanks. This initial battalion, equipped with tanks from the first two batches of deliveries, replaces Taiwan’s decades-old CM-11 Brave Tiger and M60A3 tanks, which military officials noted cannot survive modern anti-tank weapons.

The M1A2T provides a massive leap in firepower, mobility, and survivability. Its 120mm cannon and advanced “hunter-killer” fire control system—which allows the commander and gunner to track two targets simultaneously—are seen as critical for city defense and counter-landing operations.
President Lai described the commissioning as a fundamental step in Taiwan’s “layered deterrence” strategy, demonstrating the armed forces’ “commitment to modernization and combat readiness.”
The tanks are a key component of a broader U.S.-backed effort to harden Taiwan against a potential Chinese invasion. This strategy includes several other high-end, survivable weapon systems that Taiwan has begun to integrate, including:
* HIMARS: High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems for long-range precision strikes.
* F-16V Fighters: An upgraded fleet of advanced fighter jets.
* ATACMS: Army Tactical Missile Systems capable of striking targets deep within mainland China.
The activation comes as tensions across the Taiwan Strait remain high, with China conducting increasingly intense military drills. While experts note that the Taiwanese army must still train to integrate these new tanks with infantry and drones, the message is clear: Taiwan is investing in top-tier firepower to make an invasion as costly as possible.
