U.S. Navy Confirms Loss of $240 Million MQ-4C Triton Drone

U.S. Navy confirms first-ever loss of $240 million MQ-4C Triton drone in Iran war, classified as Class A mishap. High-altitude surveillance aircraft crash adds to substantial Operation Epic Fury losses including multiple fighter jets and support aircraft.

The U.S. Navy has officially confirmed the loss of an MQ-4C Triton surveillance drone, its first-ever destruction of the $240 million aircraft, which crashed on April 9 during operations in the Iran war. Naval Safety Command classified the incident as a “Class A” mishap, indicating over $2.5 million in damage and total aircraft destruction without personnel injuries.

The Triton, assigned to Unmanned Patrol Squadron 19 based at Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, disappeared from flight-tracking sites during a Persian Gulf mission after initiating rapid descent from 50,000 feet. The Navy cited operational security in withholding crash location details, though tracking data had suggested potential Iranian airspace proximity.
The MQ-4C, manufactured by Northrop Grumman, provides high-altitude, long-endurance maritime intelligence and reconnaissance with 24-plus hour endurance. With only twenty aircraft in the Navy’s inventory, the loss represents five percent of total fleet capability at approximately eight times the cost of an MQ-9 Reaper drone.

The destruction adds to substantial American aircraft losses during Operation Epic Fury, including three F-15s downed by Kuwaiti friendly fire, one F-15E and one A-10 shot down by Iran, and a KC-135 crash in Iraq killing six crew members. Iranian strikes have additionally damaged ground-based support aircraft including an E-3 Sentry command plane.
The Triton loss demonstrates persistent vulnerability of high-value surveillance assets in contested airspace despite advanced capabilities, occurring as U.S. forces implement Hormuz mine clearance and comprehensive Iranian port blockade involving over a dozen warships.
