Armenia is reportedly in the final stages of a landmark $2.5 to $3 billion defense deal with India to procure 8 to 12 Su-30MKI multirole fighter jets from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This move represents a major strategic pivot for Armenia, which is actively diversifying its defense partnerships away from its traditional reliance on Russia.
The deal, reported by OC Media and Indian defense sources, is seen as a direct response to neighboring Azerbaijan’s recent acquisition of JF-17C Block-III fighters from Pakistan.
Deliveries of the advanced fighter jets are expected to begin in 2027 and be completed by 2029. The Armenian variant of the Su-30MKI is slated to be one of the most advanced export versions of the platform, as it will be equipped with a suite of sophisticated Indian-made systems.
The package reportedly includes:
* Uttam AESA Radar: An advanced Active Electronically Scanned Array radar.
* DRDO EW Suites: A next-generation electronic warfare and defensive aids suite.
* Astra Missiles: A formidable air-to-air missile package, including the Astra Mk.1 (110 km range) and the Astra Mk.2 (160-200 km range).
* Training & Support: The deal also covers comprehensive pilot training, ground support systems, and a dedicated maintenance infrastructure.
This agreement marks Armenia’s most ambitious air force modernization in decades and is one of India’s largest-ever defense export successes. It follows a series of other major arms deals between the two nations, including Armenia’s prior purchase of Indian-made Pinaka rocket systems, Swathi counter-battery radars, and Akash-1S surface-to-air missiles.
