Russian Drone Strikes Polish Home, No Injuries Reported

A Russian military drone struck a residential building in eastern Poland, in a new and significant escalation of tensions between Russia and the NATO alliance. The incident, which occurred in the village of Wyryki in the Lublin region, was reported by Polish news agency Polsat News and confirmed by Reuters. While the drone strike damaged a home, no one was injured, according to initial reports. 
The strike is the latest in a series of violations of Polish airspace by Russian drones. The Polish Armed Forces have confirmed that they shot down a number of these drones that repeatedly entered the country’s airspace during a massive Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine. The military, which had been placed on “maximum readiness,” said it used weapons to “neutralize” the objects it deemed a threat. The government has not released the exact number of drones shot down, but a search is underway for debris and potential crash sites. 
The incident in Wyryki is a major development in the conflict. While Poland has previously found the wreckage of Russian drones on its territory, this is the first time a drone has struck a residential building. The event comes just a day after Poland’s defense minister stated that the drone incursions were not accidents, but a deliberate act of aggression. The confirmation that a drone hit a house will likely escalate the political and diplomatic fallout. 
The international community has reacted with alarm. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had temporarily closed four Polish airports, including Warsaw’s Chopin Airport and the key aid hub at Rzeszów–Jasionka, due to what it called “unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security.” NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has stated that the alliance stands in “full solidarity with Poland” and is ready to defend “every inch of Allied territory.” The incident, and the damage to a civilian home, is a stark reminder of how close the conflict is to NATO’s borders and the potential for a small, targeted act to trigger a major crisis.
