In a significant move to bolster its defenses, Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki has signed a resolution consenting to the presence of foreign forces from NATO member states within the country. The announcement, made by Poland’s National Security Bureau, follows a direct provocation from Russia, whose drones recently breached Polish airspace in a move that has been widely condemned as an act of aggression. The resolution formalizes the presence of allied troops and equipment, providing a clear signal of Poland’s commitment to collective defense.
The decision comes in the wake of a highly tense week for Poland. A large swarm of Russian drones violated Polish airspace, with two of the unmanned vehicles shot down by Dutch F-35 fighter jets operating under NATO command. The incident prompted Poland to invoke Article 4 of the NATO treaty, a provision that allows a member to call for consultations when its territorial integrity, political independence, or security is threatened. The NATO response has been swift, with the alliance announcing a new initiative called “Eastern Sentry” to enhance its posture along the eastern flank. The U.S. and other allies, including France, Germany, and Denmark, have also pledged additional air support and military assets to help defend Poland against future incursions.
The consent to allow foreign troops on Polish soil is a crucial step in the implementation of these new defense measures. While NATO already has a presence in Poland, the presidential resolution provides the necessary legal and political framework for an increased and sustained allied presence. It is a powerful symbol of solidarity and a clear message to Russia that any future acts of aggression will be met with a unified and decisive response from the alliance.
The move also highlights the complex political dynamics within Poland. The country’s new president, Karol Nawrocki, who took office in 2025, has a more conservative and nationalistic stance than his predecessor. His decision to formalize the presence of foreign troops is seen by many as a direct result of the Russian provocation and a key component of his “pro-NATO” and “pro-Western” campaign platform. The resolution was announced by the National Security Bureau (BBN), a body that has been central to the government’s response to the crisis.
The situation remains tense, with Russia and its ally Belarus conducting large-scale military exercises called “Zapad 2025” near the Polish border. Warsaw has responded by deploying 40,000 of its own troops to the border and has warned that the country is closer to military conflict “than at any time since the second world war.” The consent to foreign troops is a critical component of Poland’s defensive strategy, as it seeks to deter any further escalation and ensure the safety of its citizens.
