Cole Allen, the man charged with attempting to assassinate President Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, purchased his weapons in 2023 and 2025 and traveled by train from California to Washington, according to newly unsealed court filings. The criminal complaint and FBI affidavit reveal meticulous planning for the April 25 attack.
Allen reserved three nights at the Washington Hilton on April 6, selecting the venue hosting the annual press gala attended by over 2,500 political and media figures. He departed Los Angeles by train on April 21, transferred in Chicago, and arrived in Washington Friday afternoon before checking into the hotel.
At approximately 8:34 p.m. Saturday, Allen approached the security checkpoint holding a shotgun and ran through the magnetometer. Secret Service personnel heard a gunshot, and Officer V.G. was struck in the chest while wearing a ballistic vest. The officer drew his weapon and fired multiple times, causing Allen to fall with minor injuries, though he was not shot.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated law enforcement fired five shots total, though investigators have not confirmed whether the officer was hit by Allen’s weapon or friendly fire. Allen carried a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun purchased in August 2025 and a Rock Island Armory .38 caliber pistol bought in October 2023.
Shortly before the attack, Allen scheduled an email manifesto to his family and former employer, signing it “Cole ‘coldForce’ ‘Friendly Federal Assassin’ Allen.” The FBI found additional writings at his California home and hotel room. The officer struck has been released from hospital.
