U.S. Sanctions Nine Lebanese Officials Tied to Hezbollah

U.S. Treasury sanctions nine Lebanese officials linked to Hezbollah, acknowledging militia infiltration of state institutions while sparing Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri as pragmatic interlocutor. Action targets political infrastructure enabling Hezbollah's dominance over Lebanese sovereignty.

The U.S. Treasury sanctioned nine Lebanese officials with direct links to Hezbollah on Wednesday, including politicians, security officers, and intelligence personnel, formally acknowledging the militia’s deep infiltration of Lebanese state institutions rather than operating outside them.
The designations target Hezbollah parliamentarians and officials accused of preserving militia weapons, influencing government decisions, and coordinating military activity. Washington also sanctioned members of Amal, Hezbollah’s closest political ally, though notably excluded Amal leader Nabih Berri, who has served as Parliament Speaker since 1992.
Berri’s omission reflects persistent American reliance on him as a pragmatic interlocutor despite accusations that his political infrastructure enabled Hezbollah’s dominance over Lebanese state capacity. Critics have long charged Berri with protecting the corrupt political system that allowed the militia to eclipse sovereign authority, and several of his close allies faced prior U.S. sanctions for corruption and Hezbollah support.
Treasury’s statement framed the action as targeting those who “infiltrated the Lebanese government and helped Hezbollah undermine sovereignty.” The language marks explicit recognition that Hezbollah’s threat extends beyond military capacity to political capture of Lebanese governance structures.
The sanctions coincide with stalled U.S.-Iran negotiations and ongoing Israeli operations in southern Lebanon, suggesting Washington seeks to degrade Hezbollah’s institutional support network while military pressure continues. Whether designations alter Lebanese political dynamics or merely reinforce existing divisions depends on Berri’s response and European compliance with American financial restrictions.
