OpenAI Launches $8 “ChatGPT Go” Tier, Confirms Ads Are Coming to Lower Plans

OpenAI has officially expanded its subscription lineup with the worldwide launch of ChatGPT Go, a new lower-cost tier priced at $8 per month (in the U.S.). Designed to bridge the gap between the free version and the premium Plus plan, ChatGPT Go offers expanded access to the company’s latest “GPT-5.2 Instant” model.
Subscribers to the new Go tier will receive significantly higher usage limits—including 10x more messages, file uploads, and image generations compared to the free version—along with “longer memory,” allowing the AI to retain context over extended periods. However, unlike the $20/month Plus tier, ChatGPT Go does not include access to the advanced “GPT-5.2 Thinking” model, which remains exclusive to higher-paying users for complex reasoning tasks.
Ads Arrive in ChatGPT
In a controversial move, OpenAI also announced that it will begin testing advertisements in both the Free and ChatGPT Go tiers for users in the U.S. in the coming weeks.
* Placement: Ads will appear at the bottom of responses when relevant to the conversation.
* Privacy: OpenAI promises that conversations remain private from advertisers and that user data will never be sold.
* Exclusions: Ads will not display during conversations about sensitive topics, such as health, mental health, or politics.
Crucially, the $8 monthly fee for ChatGPT Go does not remove ads; users must upgrade to ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo) or ChatGPT Pro ($200/mo) for a completely ad-free experience. OpenAI stated that ad revenue is necessary to “support our commitment to making AI accessible to everyone” by subsidizing the costs of the free and affordable tiers.
The New Tier Hierarchy:
* Free: Standard access, includes ads.
* ChatGPT Go ($8/mo): GPT-5.2 Instant, 10x limits, extended memory, includes ads.
* ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo): GPT-5.2 Thinking, ad-free.
* ChatGPT Pro ($200/mo): High-compute access, ad-free.
