Tensions in the Taiwan Strait have reached a new boiling point as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) officially launched massive joint military exercises dubbed “Justice Mission-2025” on Monday, December 29. In what defense analysts are calling the most aggressive encirclement simulation to date, Beijing has mobilized its Army, Navy, Air Force, and Rocket Force units to conduct live-fire drills and blockade operations surrounding the self-ruled island.
According to Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the PLA’s Eastern Theater Command, the operation is designed as a “stern warning” to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and external powers interfering in China’s internal affairs. The drills, which began early Monday morning, involve warships and fighter jets approaching Taiwan from multiple vectors—north, southwest, southeast, and east—effectively sealing off the island’s primary maritime access points.
The Eastern Theater Command released a map designating five specific exclusion zones where live-fire exercises will be conducted. These zones include areas dangerously close to Taiwan’s major commercial ports, specifically Keelung in the north and Kaohsiung in the south. Maritime authorities have issued urgent navigation warnings, advising all commercial vessels and aircraft to avoid these sectors between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM on Tuesday, December 30, citing the risk of missile strikes and artillery fire.
“Justice Mission-2025” appears to be a direct response to recent geopolitical developments. The exercises follow the United States’ approval of a record-breaking $11 billion arms package for Taiwan earlier this month, which includes advanced radar systems and mobile missile launchers. Additionally, friction has intensified following comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who recently suggested that Tokyo could not remain neutral in the event of a cross-strait conflict. Beijing has framed these moves as “crossing the red line,” using the drills to demonstrate its capability to isolate Taiwan from its allies militarily.
Military experts note that the scope of “Justice Mission-2025” exceeds previous exercises like “Joint Sword-2024.” The integration of the Rocket Force suggests a focus on precision strikes against land-based targets and mobile naval assets. Furthermore, the positioning of the drills to the east of Taiwan is strategically significant, as it signals the PLA’s intent to deny access to American or Japanese forces attempting to intervene from the Pacific Ocean.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has condemned the drills as an “irrational provocation” that threatens regional peace and stability. In response, Taipei has activated its own rapid-response defense protocols, deploying land-based missile systems and scrambling jets to monitor PLA movements. As Chinese warships loom on the horizon, the international community watches with bated breath, fearing that the line between simulation and actual conflict is becoming dangerously thin.
