Two National Guard members are in critical condition following a brazen shooting incident in downtown Washington, D.C., just blocks from the White House. The attack, which plunged the nation’s capital into a temporary lockdown on the eve of Thanksgiving, unfolded near Farragut Square at the intersection of 17th and I Street NW, an area heavily patrolled by military personnel under recent federal emergency orders.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and federal authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody. Images from the scene, captured by news photographers, show an unidentified man dressed in military-style fatigues being loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher, reportedly suffering from gunshot wounds sustained during his apprehension. While initial unverified reports circulated regarding a potential fatality among the servicemen, officials have currently listed both Guardsmen in critical condition, with President Donald Trump stating on Truth Social that they were “critically wounded” and that the shooter would pay a “very steep price.”

The chaotic scene triggered a massive security response. The White House was immediately placed on lockdown, and heavily armed tactical teams swarmed the Farragut West Metro station area. Witnesses described a sudden eruption of gunfire that sent pedestrians fleeing and office workers sheltering in place. “We saw National Guard troops running across the square, and then the sirens started,” one witness reported.
This violent escalation comes against the backdrop of a highly controversial security environment in Washington. Hundreds of National Guard troops from multiple states have been stationed in the District since August 2025, following President Trump’s emergency order federalizing the local police force to combat crime. The presence of uniformed soldiers on street corners has become a flashpoint for political tension, though it remains unclear if today’s attack was a targeted political assassination or an isolated act of violence.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem issued a statement asking the public to “pray for the two National Guardsmen,” while confirming that federal agencies are working in lockstep with the MPD to determine the motive. The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are assisting in the investigation.
As night fell, the immediate area remained cordoned off with yellow police tape, illuminated by the flashing lights of dozens of emergency vehicles. The suspect remains hospitalized under heavy guard, and authorities have yet to release his identity or potential motives. The shooting has rattled a city already on high alert, raising fresh questions about the risks facing the military personnel patrolling American streets.
