IDF Investigates Journalist Wounding in Lebanon Strike

IDF investigating airstrike that wounded two female journalists in southern Lebanon security zone, denies targeting rescue personnel after Reuters reports drone grenade dropped on extraction efforts. Military claims Hezbollah-associated building was target.

The Israeli military is investigating after two female journalists were wounded during an airstrike in the IDF-held security zone in southern Lebanon, the military confirmed Tuesday. The incident occurred when troops identified two vehicles departing a building known for Hezbollah use in the Tayri area.
The IDF stated that “terrorists crossed the forward defense line and approached the forces in a manner that posed an immediate threat,” prompting Israeli Air Force engagement of one vehicle and subsequent building strike “to which the terrorists fled.” Reports then emerged that two journalists were injured in the operation.
Reuters reported that an Israeli drone dropped a grenade on rescue personnel attempting to extract one wounded journalist from rubble. The IDF denied preventing rescue forces from reaching the area, though acknowledged the incident remains under review.
The military emphasized that it “does not target journalists and acts to mitigate harm to them while maintaining the safety and security of its troops.” The IDF noted that forward defense line maps were published and the area evacuated, implying journalists operated in known combat zones at their own risk.
The incident tests Israeli claims of operational precision and civilian protection during southern Lebanon occupation. Journalist casualties in conflict zones frequently generate international scrutiny, particularly when rescue operations are themselves targeted. The investigation’s findings will determine whether standard rules of engagement were followed or operational errors occurred.
