Lebanese President Declares ‘We Will Not Leave’ After Ceasefire

Lebanese President Aoun declares "we will not leave" and "no longer a card in anyone's pocket" after ceasefire, framing direct Israel talks as strength-based sovereignty restoration. Pledges no more deaths "for others' interests" and reconstruction "hand in hand."

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun delivered an extensive national address Thursday night declaring “we are staying here and will not leave,” framing the ten-day ceasefire as restoration of Lebanese sovereignty after nearly half a century of external interference. The speech emphasized national unity and rejected accusations that negotiations represent weakness or concession.
Aoun described the truce as “the fruit of Lebanese sacrifices” and “the essence of everyone’s efforts,” acknowledging “accusations and insults” endured during diplomatic initiatives. He positioned direct talks with Israel as “a decision stemming from our strength and our people’s right,” insisting “negotiations are not weakness, retreat, or surrender.”
The President declared Lebanon “regained for the first time in nearly half a century” and is “no longer a card in anyone’s pocket or a playground for anyone,” directly challenging Iranian and Syrian historical influence. He pledged to prevent further Lebanese deaths “for others’ interests” and rejected any agreement compromising rights, dignity, or territory.
Aoun assumed full responsibility for diplomatic choices, stating readiness to “go wherever necessary to liberate my country.” He emphasized reconstruction “hand in hand” and “all Lebanese in one ship,” while condemning “doubting and treasonous voices” seeking division. The address targeted both domestic Hezbollah skepticism and external accusations of capitulation.
The speech’s sovereignty-focused framing attempts to legitimize state-level diplomacy independent of militia interests, though implementation depends on Hezbollah compliance and Israeli restraint during the renewable ten-day window. Aoun’s explicit rejection of “axes of power” calculations signals fundamental foreign policy reorientation.
