The United States urged Israel on Monday to avoid launching strikes on Beirut’s international airport or the roads leading to it. This plea comes as the Israeli military continues its intense bombardment of Hezbollah positions in Beirut’s southern suburbs. U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the importance of keeping the airport and access routes open, particularly to facilitate the evacuation of American and other foreign nationals from Lebanon.
Miller noted that around 900 people have been evacuated via U.S.-chartered flights, while commercial flights are still available. The U.S. has been coordinating near-daily flights for its citizens amidst escalating hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
Israel conducted an airstrike near the airport in Beirut on Monday, as confirmed by a security source. Meanwhile, the United States reiterated its stance that Israel’s strikes should comply with international humanitarian law and minimize civilian casualties.
