Miguel Uribe, Colombian senator and declared presidential candidate for the conservative Centro Democrático party, was shot during a political event on Saturday, June 7, in Bogotá. The shocking attack was captured on video and has sent ripples through Colombia’s fragile political landscape.

The shooting occurred during a public gathering in the Fontibón district of Bogotá, where Uribe was speaking to supporters. Eyewitness videos circulating online show the exact moment the gunshots ring out and Uribe falls to the ground. He was immediately rushed to emergency medical care, though as of now, his medical condition remains undisclosed.
Attacker Apprehended
According to Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán, the suspect was captured on the scene shortly after opening fire. “The shooter has been arrested,” Galán confirmed on X (formerly Twitter). “The entire hospital network of Bogotá is on high alert in case Senator Uribe requires a transfer. My full solidarity to the senator and his family.”
Images released from the scene show chaos and urgency as security personnel responded swiftly to the attack.
National Outrage and Political Reactions
The administration of President Gustavo Petro issued an immediate and strongly worded statement condemning the assassination attempt. The government described the shooting as “an attack not only on Senator Uribe’s personal safety, but on Colombian democracy itself.”
Petro, known for being frequently at odds with Uribe’s conservative stance, nonetheless took to social media to express personal condolences.
“My solidarity to the Uribe family,” Petro wrote. “I don’t know how to ease their pain—it is the pain of a mother and a nation.”
The shooting is already intensifying political tensions ahead of Colombia’s 2026 presidential race. Uribe has been a vocal critic of Petro’s government and a rising figure in opposition circles, seen by many as a strong contender in the conservative bloc.

A History of Political Violence
Colombia has a long and tragic history of political violence, including the assassinations of presidential candidates and elected leaders. While recent years have seen a decline in political killings, this latest attack underscores the ongoing risks public figures face amid heightened ideological divisions and instability.
Security forces are expected to increase protection for all presidential candidates, as calls grow for a national dialogue on safeguarding Colombia’s democratic processes.
