North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly ordered the execution of at least 30 government officials following catastrophic floods that devastated the country over the summer, according to a report from South Korea. The officials were blamed for their negligence in disaster prevention, which led to massive casualties and destruction.

Executions Ordered: South Korea’s TV Chosun reported that between 20 to 30 officials were sentenced to capital punishment last month. These officials were allegedly responsible for failing to implement proper disaster prevention measures in the flood-stricken regions of Chagang Province, near the Chinese border.
Kim Jong Un’s Response: The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim Jong Un condemned the negligence of these public officials, stating they caused “the casualty that cannot be allowed.” Kim ordered authorities to “strictly punish” those found guilty of failing to prevent the disaster.
Impact of the Floods: The heavy rains in late July resulted in over 4,000 homes and numerous public buildings, structures, roads, and railways being flooded in the northwestern city of Sinuiju and the neighboring town of Uiju. The flooding led to thousands of deaths and significant displacement of residents in the affected areas.
North Korea’s Stance on Aid: Despite the severe damage, North Korea has refused offers of aid from China, Russia, and South Korea, labeling some of these offers as provocations. During a two-day tour of Uiju in early August, Kim accused South Korea of exaggerating the extent of the flood damage and described it as a “smear campaign” against his government.
