Ahmad Al-Sharaa has been appointed interim president of Syria, a move marking a major political shift aimed at steering the country through a transitional period after years of conflict. The announcement was made following a wide-ranging meeting of military and revolutionary factions, where key decisions were taken to reshape Syria’s political landscape, including the suspension of the constitution and the dissolution of major state institutions.

Colonel Hassan Abdel Ghani, spokesperson for the military operations administration, confirmed Al-Sharaa’s appointment, stating, “The leader Ahmad Al-Sharaa will assume the duties of president of the Syrian Arab Republic and represent it in international forums.” He further emphasized that the transition involves forming a temporary legislative council until a permanent constitution is ratified.

The sweeping changes include the dissolution of the Syrian parliament, the disbanding of the army and security services, and the abolition of the ruling Baath Party along with affiliated organizations under the National Progressive Front. In their place, a new security institution will be established to ensure stability during the transitional phase. Military factions and revolutionary political bodies will be integrated into the state’s framework to streamline governance and security.

Al-Sharaa’s Vision for the Future

During a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Damascus, Al-Sharaa outlined four key priorities for Syria: addressing the power vacuum, preserving civil peace, rebuilding state institutions, and fostering an economic recovery to restore Syria’s regional and international standing.

“Just as we were determined to liberate Syria, we must now be equally committed to its reconstruction and development,” Al-Sharaa declared. “The victory we achieved comes with a responsibility to build a new Syria based on justice, prosperity, and reconciliation.” He described Syria’s hard-fought triumph as a victory filled not with vengeance, but with mercy and fairness, signaling a shift from conflict to nation-building.

Foreign Policy Strategy

Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Al-Sheibani echoed Al-Sharaa’s forward-looking vision, emphasizing Syria’s desire to establish constructive relationships with regional and global partners. Al-Sheibani stated, “We have succeeded in shaping a new Syrian identity that reflects the aspirations of our people and lays the foundation for a state built on freedom, justice, and dignity.”

He added that Syria will adopt a foreign policy focused on fostering cooperation, reducing regional tensions, and building strategic partnerships. “We are committed to strengthening our ties with Arab nations and enhancing relations with neighboring countries as part of Syria’s role in promoting regional peace and stability,” Al-Sheibani noted.

The new administration aims to address international concerns while pursuing opportunities for Syria to re-engage with the global community. By promoting diplomatic outreach and reconciliation, the government hopes to secure essential support for post-war recovery efforts.

A New Chapter for Syria

With Al-Sharaa at the helm, Syria’s transitional leadership faces the immense task of rebuilding a war-torn nation while maintaining civil peace and addressing humanitarian needs. Observers see the dissolution of long-standing institutions like the Baath Party and the creation of a new security framework as bold moves aimed at breaking away from the past and creating a sustainable foundation for governance.

However, challenges remain, including addressing the concerns of opposition groups, maintaining order during the transition, and securing international aid and recognition. As Syria enters this critical period, the success of Al-Sharaa’s administration will likely depend on its ability to unite various factions and implement meaningful reforms.

The coming months will be crucial in determining whether this new leadership can achieve stability and prosperity or whether it will face setbacks amid lingering tensions and unresolved conflicts. For now, Al-Sharaa’s message is one of optimism and determination to build a Syria that thrives in peace and cooperation.
