The letter frames annexation as a security imperative, claiming it would “prevent another massacre in the heart of the country” and “ensure Israel’s security for generations.” Politically, this move is seen by many as a compensatory gesture to the Israeli right wing—possibly in return for accepting a Gaza ceasefire deal.
The timing is strategic: the ministers highlight Israel’s recent achievements against Iran and its allies, while also banking on potential backing from President Trump, who supported settlement annexation in his 2020 Middle East peace plan.
Meanwhile, some analysts believe this could be a tactical play aimed at expanding the Abraham Accords. A similar annexation discussion in 2020 was shelved following UAE opposition, which ultimately opened the door for normalization. With Saudi Arabia now a key target, this annexation talk may serve as a bargaining chip more than an actual plan.
