Commander Cameron Yaste, the commanding officer of the USS John S. McCain (DDG-56), an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, was relieved of his duties due to a “loss of confidence” in his ability to command. The decision was made by Rear Admiral Christopher Alexander, the commander of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, amid the ship’s deployment in the Middle East as part of the U.S. 5th Fleet operations.
Captain Allison Christy, the deputy commodore of Destroyer Squadron 21 (DESRON-21), has temporarily taken over command of the USS John S. McCain. The destroyer is currently on a scheduled deployment in the 5th Fleet area, which covers critical regions such as the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and parts of the Indian Ocean.
Commander Yaste, who had been in command since October 2023, was reassigned to the Naval Surface Group Northwest following his relief. His removal was not due to personal misconduct but was part of the Navy’s strict policy of holding commanding officers to high standards and accountability for their roles and responsibilities.
The USS John S. McCain has been involved in notable incidents in the past, such as a public disagreement in 2019 when Navy officials were asked to keep the ship out of sight during a visit by President Donald Trump to Japan due to his contentious relationship with the late Senator John McCain, the ship’s namesake.
