Undersea Fiber-Optic Cable Between Latvia and Sweden Damaged by ‘External Influences’
The Latvian Radio and Television Center (LVRTC) has reported damage to an undersea fiber-optic cable connecting Latvia to the Swedish island of Gotland. Officials state that the damage, which occurred at a depth of more than 50 meters, appears to be the result of “external influences.”
According to an LVRTC official, a full assessment of the damage will only be possible once repair operations begin. Meanwhile, the Latvian Navy has contacted relevant NATO allies to investigate the incident, with two vessels currently under scrutiny for possible involvement.
The incident raises concerns over the security of critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, a region of increasing strategic importance. Authorities are expected to release further details as investigations continue.
