U.S. Patriot Missiles in South Korea Headed to Middle East in Rare Deployment
South Korea and the United States have agreed to temporarily relocate Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) missile batteries from U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) to the Middle East, in what sources describe as a “monthslong” deployment. This marks the first known transfer of USFK defense assets to another region, coinciding with escalating U.S. military operations against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
While the Patriot system plays a critical role in South Korea’s multilayered missile defense shield against North Korean threats, this shift is raising concerns in Seoul over whether the Trump administration’s transactional foreign policy may begin reshaping the role of U.S. troops stationed in South Korea.
USFK, in a brief statement, reaffirmed its ironclad commitment to the Korean Peninsula and said it would maintain a ready and lethal force during the rotation.
