| U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Ends Official Recognition of Cultural Heritage Months
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced a policy change yesterday, effective immediately, ending the use of Department of Defense (DoD) resources and working hours to celebrate Cultural Heritage Months.
Servicemembers and civilians will still be allowed to participate in events and celebrations during their off-duty hours, but official funding, time, and resources will no longer be allocated to these observances.
Cultural Heritage Months Impacted:
• National African American/Black History Month
• Women’s History Month
• Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
• Pride Month
• National Hispanic Heritage Month
• National Disability Employment Awareness Month
• National American Indian Heritage Month
The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with supporters viewing it as a focus on mission readiness and detractors arguing it diminishes inclusivity within the military.
