🇺🇸 The White House has officially confirmed that President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order lifting multiple U.S. sanctions on Syria, citing major political changes in the country. The move follows the rise of a new Syrian leadership under Ahmad al-Sharaa, which Trump says “has taken positive measures” over the last six months.
The sanctions relief includes waivers even on penalties related to chemical weapons, with a 20-day countdown before congressional oversight. Trump stated that this policy shift “supports U.S. national security and foreign policy objectives,” particularly in light of Syria’s new role in controlling ISIS detention camps, which currently hold around 50,000 individuals, including fighters and civilians.
The administration emphasized that this decision is conditional. If Syria fails to meet progress benchmarks—such as normalization talks with Israel or maintaining regional stability—the sanctions may be reinstated immediately.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent added that lifting sanctions will help Syria reconnect with the global economy, rebuild critical infrastructure, and encourage peace with neighbors. The White House affirmed it will closely monitor the process, stressing that American interests remain paramount even amid this strategic shift.
