A senior Hezbollah official has revealed the details surrounding the death of former Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs last month. The airstrike, which occurred on September 27th, targeted a residential complex in the Haret Hreik neighborhood. According to reports from Israeli Army Radio, Israel’s 69th Air Squadron dropped around 85 bunker-busting bombs, each weighing a ton, in an attempt to assassinate Nasrallah.
Mouhamad Qomati, a member of Hezbollah’s political council, disclosed that Nasrallah was in a passageway inside an underground tunnel where he was holding a meeting at the time of the strike. The intense gases released by the Israeli bombardment caused his suffocation.
Qomati explained that Hezbollah’s civil defense teams attempted to reach the underground location multiple times but were forced back due to the dangerous gases. Eventually, a determined rescuer made it inside, followed by others. Tragically, one of the medics, in his devotion to Nasrallah, removed his breathing mask to place it on Nasrallah, hoping to save him, but both perished.
Qomati addressed the skepticism from some Hezbollah supporters who refused to believe Nasrallah had been killed, urging them to accept the reality: “We have seen his body, touched it, and although it is painful, we must move past the rumors and face our duties.”
Regarding the funeral arrangements, Qomati mentioned that Hezbollah is waiting for a more secure time to hold the burial, as Beirut’s southern suburbs remain under heavy bombardment. The funeral will be organized in a manner befitting Nasrallah’s role and legacy.
