Israeli airstrikes on southern Beirut have prevented rescue workers from accessing the site of a suspected strike that may have killed Hashem Safieddine, Hezbollah’s anticipated next leader. Three Lebanese security sources, speaking to Reuters, confirmed that Safieddine has been “unreachable” since the Israeli strike targeted an underground bunker in Beirut, which allegedly housed Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the airstrike but did not provide specifics on who was present at the targeted site. Safieddine has been widely viewed as the likely successor to Hezbollah’s current leader, Hassan Nasrallah, who was reportedly killed in earlier Israeli strikes.
There has been no immediate reaction from Hezbollah regarding the reports of Safieddine’s status following the strike.
