The “Safe Passage” Deal: Israel Proposes a Plan Involving the Fate of Yahya Sinwar
Israel has put forward a proposal to the United States, referred to as the “Safe Passage Deal,” aimed at ending the current hostilities in Gaza. The key elements of this proposal include:
- The release of all Israeli hostages at once.
- Providing safe passage for Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, and any others who wish to leave the Gaza Strip.
- The release of Palestinian prisoners.
- The disarmament of the Gaza Strip.
- The establishment of an alternative governing mechanism in Gaza.
- Ending the ongoing war.
This proposal was presented by Israel’s coordinator for prisoners and missing persons, Gal Hirsch, who met with the families of the Israeli hostages to inform them about the new plan. During the meeting, Hirsch stated that these key points were discussed during his meetings last week with U.S. officials at the White House and the State Department.
According to sources from Israeli Broadcasting Authority, the proposal has been dubbed the “Safe Passage Deal.”
An Israeli senior official commented on the situation, saying: “Given the difficulties facing the negotiations and the ticking clock on the lives of the hostages, we wish to propose a secondary plan (Plan B) that could expedite the process and allow for a faster deal if Sinwar leaves and the war ends.”
He added, “This would allow us to achieve the war’s objectives and enable Hamas leadership in Gaza to leave safely.”
Next week, more than 30 members of the families of Israeli hostages are expected to participate in meetings at the United Nations General Assembly.
On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated that halting the Gaza war is the only way to reduce tensions in the region.
This proposal, centered around the exit of Hamas leadership and disarmament of Gaza, represents a significant shift in efforts to end the conflict and rescue hostages while seeking a long-term solution for governance in the Gaza Strip.
