Iran’s Sharp Message to Trump: “The Election Is an Opportunity to Reevaluate Past Approaches”
In Tehran, officials are maintaining a composed stance despite Trump’s return to the White House. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baqaei stated that Trump’s victory could serve as a chance to reassess the policies of previous US administrations towards Iran. “We have had bitter experiences with the policies of various American administrations in the past. The election is an opportunity to reevaluate these misguided approaches,” he said.
Iranian President Masoud Pashakian emphasized that Iran relies on its own strength and people, stating, “We do not care who wins the US elections.” Meanwhile, Hezbollah-affiliated Lebanese MP Ibrahim Al-Moussawi welcomed attempts to halt regional warfare but expressed skepticism about relying on any specific US administration for a ceasefire.
Following Trump’s victory, Iran avoided shifting its rhetoric, maintaining a firm stance towards Israel. Iranian news agencies reported statements from Deputy Commander of the Revolutionary Guards, Ali Fadavi, who said, “Tehran is ready for confrontation with Israel and does not rule out a preemptive strike by the US and Israel.”
Arab and Western sources told Reuters that Trump may reinstate his “maximum pressure” policy through intensified sanctions on Iran’s oil industry and possibly encourage Israel to target Iran’s nuclear facilities. During his first term, Trump reimposed sanctions on Iran after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, affecting Iran’s economy with high inflation, lower oil exports, and forced austerity measures.
