Two members of the West Virginia National Guard have been shot and killed in a violent incident near the White House in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, November 26, 2025. The shooting, which triggered a massive security response and a temporary lockdown of the executive complex, occurred near Farragut Square at the intersection of 17th and I Streets NW.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey confirmed the fatalities in a statement on Wednesday evening, expressing “great sorrow” and noting that the soldiers “lost their lives in the service of their country.” This confirmation followed conflicting initial reports that had listed the service members in critical condition.
President Donald Trump, who was briefed on the situation while in Florida for the Thanksgiving holiday, condemned the attack on Truth Social. He referred to the shooter as an “animal” who would pay a “very steep price,” adding, “God bless our Great National Guard… I, as President of the United States, am with you!”
The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken into custody by the Metropolitan Police Department. Law enforcement officials confirmed the suspect was also wounded during the apprehension and was transported to a local hospital. Witnesses described a chaotic scene involving a heavy police presence and a rare medical helicopter landing on the National Mall to evacuate the victims.
The incident has heightened tensions in the capital, where hundreds of National Guard troops have been deployed since August under a federal emergency order. The investigation is ongoing, involving the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
