A dramatic aviation emergency unfolded on Interstate 95 in Brevard County, Florida, on Monday evening, December 8, 2025, when a small plane attempting a forced landing on the busy highway collided with a vehicle. The incident, which occurred in the southbound lanes near Cocoa, caused significant traffic disruption during rush hour and sent one driver to the hospital.
Emergency Landing and Collision Details
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating the crash involving a Beechcraft 55 Baron, a fixed-wing, multi-engine piston aircraft. The pilot, a 27-year-old male, reported experiencing double-engine failure shortly after taking off from Merritt Island Airport. With no other options, the pilot was forced to attempt an emergency landing directly onto the southbound lanes of I-95.

The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. near mile marker 201. During the emergency maneuver, the plane struck a 2023 Toyota Camry traveling in the center lane.
* Injuries: The 57-year-old female driver of the Toyota Camry was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. In a fortunate outcome given the severity of the crash, the 27-year-old pilot and his male passenger were uninjured and declined medical transport.
* Damage: Photos from the scene showed the plane resting across the southbound lanes, with its front end damaged. The Toyota Camry sustained heavy damage to its rear and side panels.
Investigation and Traffic Chaos
The crash immediately shut down a portion of the southbound lanes of I-95 near the Viera area, causing major traffic backups for several hours as emergency crews from Brevard County Fire Rescue and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) secured the scene and worked to remove the wreckage. The highway was fully reopened shortly before 9:00 p.m.
The FAA is leading the investigation into the exact circumstances of the engine failure and the emergency landing attempt. The Florida Highway Patrol is conducting a parallel investigation into the collision. This incident marked the second aviation emergency on a Central Florida roadway on the same day, following an earlier crash of a single-engine Cessna Skyhawk near DeLand. The FHP confirmed that the pilot’s quick thinking in steering the plane to the center of the interstate, rather than hitting the barrier or overhead signs, likely prevented more severe injuries or fatalities.
