Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has firmly shut the door on any potential diplomatic engagement with Washington, declaring in a televised address on Thursday that the Trump administration is “not worthy” of contact or cooperation with the Islamic Republic. The sharp rebuke serves as a definitive rejection of recent rumors suggesting that Tehran had been quietly exchanging messages with the U.S. amid rising regional tensions.
Speaking to a gathering of the Basij paramilitary force in Tehran, Khamenei dismissed reports of back-channel communications as a “pure lie.” His comments appear to be a direct response to speculation that Iran might be seeking a diplomatic off-ramp following the violent flare-ups earlier this year. “Such a government [the United States] is not worthy of being approached or cooperated with by a government like the Islamic Republic,” the Supreme Leader stated, emphasizing that the ideological and strategic chasm between the two nations remains unbridgeable.
The Supreme Leader’s defiant stance comes against a backdrop of renewed U.S. pressure under President Donald Trump’s second term. Khamenei explicitly cited Washington’s unwavering support for Israel and its continued military footprint in the Middle East as primary disqualifiers for any form of partnership. “Cooperation with Iran is not possible as long as the U.S. continues to support the accursed Zionist regime, maintains military bases, and interferes in the region,” he asserted.
Khamenei also referenced the brief but intense “12-day conflict” between Israel and Iran in June 2025, which saw U.S. forces conduct direct strikes on Iranian nuclear infrastructure. He claimed that neither the United States nor Israel achieved “any objectives” during that confrontation, portraying Iran’s survival and resilience as a victory in itself. This narrative of resistance is likely intended to bolster domestic morale and signal to hardline factions that the regime will not buckle under the renewed “maximum pressure” campaign.
The speech effectively torpedoes any immediate hopes for reviving the stalled nuclear negotiations, which have been in limbo since the June hostilities. By framing the U.S. administration as inherently untrustworthy and morally bankrupt, Khamenei is signaling that Tehran is prepared to weather continued sanctions and isolation rather than engage in what he views as a coercive and predetermined negotiation process.
