A suspected extremist arson attack on two high-voltage pylons in southeast Berlin has plunged over 43,000 homes and businesses into darkness, prompting a major emergency response and raising new alarms about the vulnerability of Germany’s critical infrastructure. The incident, which occurred overnight, cut power to a large section of the city, affecting traffic lights, public transportation, and even a number of nursing homes, where patients had to be evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Berlin police have stated that the blaze was not an accident. Investigators found evidence of accelerants and are treating the incident as a politically motivated act of sabotage. While no suspects have been officially named, the police are reportedly investigating far-left extremist groups that have been linked to similar attacks on Germany’s power grid. One such incident in March 2024, in which an arson attack on a pylon near Berlin shut down the Tesla Gigafactory, was later claimed by a far-left group called the “Volcano Group.” The methods used in this latest attack are consistent with those used in previous acts of sabotage.
The power company, Stromnetz Berlin, confirmed the outage but has since been able to restore service to all affected areas. However, the temporary disruption served as a stark reminder of how easily a small, targeted attack on infrastructure can cause widespread chaos. The outage crippled public transit, caused significant economic disruption, and endangered the lives of vulnerable citizens, a key objective for many extremist groups.
For German authorities, the attack represents a new level of escalation in left-wing extremism, which has increasingly focused its attention on industrial and energy infrastructure. The groups involved in these attacks see such sabotage as a way to undermine the capitalist system and inflict the “biggest possible blackout” on what they view as symbols of corporate power. The police are continuing their investigation, but the incident has already renewed a fierce debate about the need for greater security and a more robust response to extremist threats.
