FAA to Restrict Helicopter Flights Over Key Areas Near Washington D.C. Following Deadly Mid-Air Collision
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy has announced immediate new flight restrictions around Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in the wake of Wednesday’s deadly collision between a CRJ-700 passenger airliner and a U.S. Army H-60 “Black Hawk” helicopter, which resulted in 67 fatalities.
Key Details of the New Restrictions:
• The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), with the backing of President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, will implement strict flight restrictions for both private and military helicopters.
• Restricted Zones will include:
• Memorial Bridge to South Capitol Street Bridge, excluding the Tidal Basin
• Haines Point to Wilson Bridge
• Airspace directly over Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
Reasons for the Restrictions:
• The decision comes after initial investigations indicated helicopter-airliner airspace conflicts near DCA as a contributing factor to the accident.
• Officials are prioritizing the safety of passengers and air crews to prevent similar incidents.
The FAA has stated that these restrictions will take effect imminently, with further updates and reviews expected in coordination with the Department of Defense and Homeland Security.
