Renault, the French automotive giant, is reportedly preparing to establish a drone manufacturing facility in Ukraine, in cooperation with a French defense partner. The announcement, made by French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu, outlines what he described as an “unprecedented partnership” between a major automotive player and a smaller French defense firm.
According to France Info, which broke the story on Sunday, the drones will be produced inside Ukraine, with production lines located just tens or hundreds of kilometers from the frontlines. The decision reflects growing strategic cooperation between Paris and Kyiv, and a major shift in how European companies are now directly contributing to Ukraine’s defense industrial base.

Details Still Under Wraps
While Renault has refused to comment on the report, Lecornu stated that the unnamed drone systems will be used primarily by the Ukrainian military, but will also be integrated into the French Army’s tactical training and operational use.
The exact model or capabilities of the drones were not disclosed, though sources indicate they are tactical UAVs designed for reconnaissance, battlefield observation, and potentially loitering strike roles.
Lecornu praised Ukraine’s advanced innovation in drone warfare, stating:
“The Ukrainians surpass us in their ability to design and field drones.”
He added that France would benefit not only from production but also from the combat feedback and tactical lessons shared by Ukrainian forces.

Drone Warfare at the Center of the Conflict
Ukraine plans to deploy over 4.5 million drones this year alone, highlighting just how central unmanned aerial vehicles have become to modern warfare. From frontline reconnaissance to direct targeting, drones are now Ukraine’s most used tool to destroy enemy equipment.

For France, the move is also about catching up. Despite having thousands of drones, the French military has lagged behind in tactical drone deployment and battlefield adaptation. This joint production venture signals a push to close that gap while supporting Kyiv’s war effort.
