Raytheon, a business unit of RTX, has officially secured a massive $1.7 billion Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract to modernize Spain’s air defense capabilities. The agreement will see the delivery of four complete Patriot air and missile defense fire units to the Spanish Armed Forces, marking a significant upgrade in the nation’s ability to counter advanced airborne threats.
Under the terms of the deal, Spain will receive the full suite of “core operational capabilities” associated with the Patriot system. This includes the delivery of advanced radar sets, missile launchers, and command-and-control stations, along with necessary support and training equipment. The acquisition is designed to seamlessly integrate Spain into the broader NATO air defense architecture, ensuring interoperability with allied forces.

This contract represents the latest milestone in a sweeping effort to harden European airspace. Throughout 2025, the continent has seen a wave of procurement decisions as nations rush to overhaul their defenses in response to the deteriorating security environment on NATO’s eastern flank. Spain’s purchase follows similar commitments made earlier this year by Germany, the Netherlands, and Romania, all of whom have moved to expand or modernize their existing Patriot fleets.

“This is not just a purchase; it is a strategic alignment,” a defense analyst noted regarding the deal. “Europe is moving toward a standardized, interoperable missile shield, and the Patriot is the backbone of that effort.” By fielding these four new systems, Madrid ensures it can contribute meaningfully to the alliance’s collective deterrence posture while protecting its own sovereign airspace.
