🇮🇷🇨🇳 Iran is actively considering a strategic acquisition of Chinese J-10C multirole fighter jets and early-warning aircraft (AWACS) to modernize its severely outdated air force, sources say. The development follows Defense Minister Mohammad Reza Ashtiani’s recent visit to China during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, where high-level talks reportedly focused on military aviation cooperation.
The goal: replace Iran’s deteriorating fleet of F-14s, F-5s, and F-4s—many of which were destroyed in recent Israeli airstrikes—with a modern, combat-proven platform. The J-10C, already in service with Pakistan and used in recent skirmishes with India, has become Beijing’s export flagship fighter jet, offering advanced avionics, AESA radar, and PL-15 long-range missile capability—though Tehran’s interest in PL-15s remains unconfirmed.
Iran is also seeking airborne early-warning systems to support its long-term air defense strategy. While air defense systems like the HQ-9B and PL-series missiles weren’t confirmed during talks, the J-10C deal appears to be moving toward finalization.
The choice is driven by cost-effectiveness, technology transfer opportunities, and logistics compatibility. With Nigeria and Pakistan already operating the jet, Iran sees the J-10C as a viable path to rapidly rebuild and reinforce its air combat capability—particularly in the face of future Israeli air threats.
