Two Delta Planes Collide on Atlanta Taxiway, Damaging Aircraft and Disrupting Flights

📍 Location: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta, Georgia, USA 🇺🇸

On the morning of September 10, 2024, two Delta Air Lines planes collided on a taxiway at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, resulting in significant damage to both aircraft. The collision involved a larger Delta Airbus A350 bound for Tokyo and a smaller Bombardier CRJ-900 regional jet operated by Delta subsidiary Endeavor Air, preparing for a flight to Lafayette, Louisiana.

Key Details of the Incident:

The Collision:

    • The incident occurred on a taxiway when the wing of the Airbus A350 clipped the tail of the smaller Bombardier CRJ-900. The impact caused the tail of the regional jet to be knocked off and lay on its side on the taxiway, while the wing of the larger A350 also sustained damage.
    • Despite the severe damage, no injuries were reported among passengers or crew members on either aircraft.

    Eyewitness Accounts and Immediate Aftermath:

      • Jason Adams, a meteorologist for WFTS-TV in Tampa, Florida, who was aboard the regional jet heading to cover Tropical Storm Francine in Louisiana, described the incident on social media platform X: “Well that was terrifying. Taxiing out for the flight from Atlanta to Louisiana and another plane appears to have clipped the back of our plane. Very jarring, metal scraping sounds then loud bangs. We’re fine. No fire or smoke.”
      • Adams shared photos showing the damaged tail of the Bombardier CRJ-900 laying on the taxiway, underscoring the severity of the collision.

      Response and Rebooking:

        • Delta Air Lines confirmed that passengers from the Airbus A350, which carried 221 passengers, and the Bombardier CRJ-900, with 56 passengers, were safe and unharmed. Passengers from the smaller aircraft were bused back to the terminal, while the larger plane returned to a gate under its own power.
        • Delta announced that all passengers from the affected flights would be rebooked on other flights to minimize inconvenience.

        Investigation and Official Statements:

          • The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched investigations into the collision to determine the cause and assess potential safety lapses. Delta Air Lines has stated that it will fully cooperate with the authorities to investigate the incident.
          • Airport officials at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport reported that the collision caused “minimal” disruptions to operations at the world’s busiest airport.

The collision between two Delta Air Lines planes on an Atlanta taxiway serves as a reminder of the complexities and risks involved in managing the high traffic at major international airports. Although the incident caused significant damage to both aircraft, the swift response from Delta, airport officials, and emergency personnel ensured passenger safety and minimized disruptions. The ongoing investigations by the NTSB and FAA will likely provide further insights into the circumstances that led to this accident and any necessary measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
