Vice President JD Vance issued a stern warning to Iranian leadership Wednesday, declaring that Tehran will “find out” President Trump “is not one to mess around” if the fragile ceasefire collapses due to bad faith negotiations. Speaking in Budapest, Vance emphasized that Washington retains substantial military, diplomatic, and economic leverage held in reserve.
The Vice President characterized the current fourteen-day pause as precarious, noting internal Iranian divisions between factions genuinely seeking agreement and those “lying about even the fragile truce that we’ve already struck.” Vance’s remarks reinforced Trump’s Tuesday night threat to resume devastating strikes if Hormuz reopening conditions are not met.
Trump accepted the Pakistani-brokered pause barely an hour before his 8 p.m. deadline to target Iranian energy infrastructure. The agreement requires “COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING” of the Strait of Hormuz, though Tehran’s response emphasized “coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces” and acknowledged “technical limitations.”
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the ceasefire applies “everywhere, including Lebanon,” and invited both delegations to Islamabad on Friday for comprehensive negotiations. This interpretation directly contradicts Israeli and subsequent American statements excluding Hezbollah operations from the pause.
Vance framed the upcoming talks as presenting Iran with two pathways: constructive engagement leading to durable settlement, or confrontation triggering withheld American capabilities.
