President Donald Trump has issued a new threat of tariffs and export restrictions on any country that imposes digital services taxes (DSTs) on American tech companies. In a post on his social media platform, the president stated that these taxes are “designed to harm, or discriminate against, American Technology” and that “this must end, and end NOW!”
The move comes after a series of similar actions and statements by the Trump administration, which has long argued that these taxes unfairly target U.S. companies like Google, Meta, and Amazon. DSTs are national taxes on the revenue generated by large technology platforms in foreign markets. Many countries, particularly in Europe, have enacted or considered these taxes, arguing that these multinational corporations generate significant profits within their borders but pay little in local taxes.
Trump warned that unless these “discriminatory actions are removed,” the U.S. would impose “substantial additional Tariffs” on those countries’ exports and “institute Export restrictions on our Highly Protected Technology and Chips.”
The issue of digital taxation has been a significant point of contention in global trade relations. While the U.S. has engaged in multilateral negotiations through organizations like the OECD, the Trump administration has been increasingly willing to use its trade power to push back against these taxes on a bilateral basis. Earlier this year, for instance, the administration successfully pressured Canada into rescinding its proposed DST.
