President Donald Trump announced on Friday, November 7, 2025, that the United States will officially boycott the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) summit in South Africa. In a fiery statement, the president cited the alleged persecution of white farmers as the reason, declaring that no U.S. government official will attend.
“It is a total disgrace that the G20 will be held in South Africa,” President Trump posted on his social media platform. “Afrikaners (people who are descended from Dutch settlers, and also French and German immigrants) are being killed and slaughtered, and their land and farms are being illegally confiscated. No U.S. Government Official will attend as long as these Human Rights abuses continue.”
The president had already indicated he would not personally attend the summit, scheduled for later this month. Vice President JD Vance was slated to lead the U.S. delegation, but a spokesperson confirmed that the Vice President will no longer be traveling to South Africa.
This move is the culmination of months of escalating tensions between the Trump administration and Pretoria. The U.S. has been openly critical of South Africa’s land reform policies, which aim to redress racial inequalities from the apartheid era. In February 2025, President Trump signed an executive order to cut U.S. aid and facilitate the resettlement of white South African farmers, whom the administration described as “victims of unjust racial discrimination.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also boycotted a G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in the country earlier this year.
The South African government, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, has repeatedly and forcefully rejected the U.S. claims. President Ramaphosa has stated that the allegations of “persecution” and “land confiscation” are “completely false.” South African officials have pointed out that, decades after the end of apartheid, white residents generally maintain a much higher standard of living than the Black majority.
The U.S. boycott marks a significant diplomatic rupture, isolating South Africa on the eve of its highest-profile international event.
In his statement, President Trump also confirmed the location for the 2026 summit, which the United States is scheduled to host. “I look forward to hosting the 2026 G20 in Miami, Florida!” he concluded. The U.S. had previously announced in September that the 2026 summit would be held at the Trump National Doral resort.
