The Royal Thai Army has mobilized heavy reinforcements including armor and artillery to the Cambodia border after Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul suspended a Malaysia-brokered peace agreement on November 10, 2025, citing a landmine blast as the trigger.
The suspension follows months of escalating tensions along the 817-kilometer disputed frontier. The peace deal, signed October 26 in Kuala Lumpur, was meant to end hostilities that killed 43 people during July clashes when Thai F-16s conducted airstrikes on Cambodian positions—the first Thai aerial combat since the Thai-Lao Border War.
Defense sources confirm armored units and artillery batteries are moving to border provinces including Sa Kaeo, Surin, Sisaket, and Banteay Meanchey. The army has already constructed 260 battle trenches and shelters at forward outposts, with Burapha Task Force receiving additional containers for operational support. Military spokesman Gen Nattapon claimed Cambodia violated the agreement, stating “this is an act by a Cambodia that does not observe the declaration signed on October 26, 2025”.
The immediate trigger was a landmine explosion that wounded Thai soldiers, though both nations accuse each other of ceasefire violations. Cambodia’s Defense Ministry condemned Thailand’s “military expansion” and urged international intervention, citing Thai martial law in border provinces and mobilization under the “Chakrabongse Bhuvanath” war-readiness plan.
The suspension derails ASEAN’s diplomatic progress. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as ASEAN chair, had brokered the ceasefire and deployed interim observer teams. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously welcomed the deal as an “important step forward” after President Trump pressured both sides with tariff threats, reducing them from 36% to 19%.
Since the peace deal collapsed, Cambodian civilians have protested at barbed-wire barriers, with Thai forces using tear gas and rubber bullets, injuring 24-30 people including Buddhist monks. Cambodia accuses Thailand of cross-border incursions; Thailand claims Cambodians entered its territory.
The army’s reinforcement order signals potential for major escalation. With armor and artillery now positioned along contested areas, the risk of renewed artillery duels and airstrikes looms large. Diplomatic channels remain open, but the peace agreement’s collapse threatens to plunge Southeast Asia into its most serious border conflict since 2011.
