The Polish military has confirmed that it scrambled fighter jets and fired on Russian drones that repeatedly violated the country’s airspace during a massive aerial attack on Ukraine. The incident, which occurred late on Tuesday and into Wednesday, marks the first time a NATO member has directly engaged Russian assets in its airspace and signals a significant escalation in the conflict. The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces released a statement on X, confirming that the country’s airspace was “repeatedly violated by drone-type objects” and that “weapons have been used” to neutralize them.
The confrontation comes as Russia launched another large-scale barrage of missiles and drones at targets in western Ukraine, with some of the drones crossing into Polish territory. In response, Poland activated both national and allied NATO aircraft. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that an “operation is under way related to the repeated violation of Polish airspace,” and stated he was in constant contact with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. The Prime Minister’s office also confirmed that the President and the Minister of National Defense were kept informed of the situation.
In an unprecedented move, Polish authorities urged citizens in the eastern regions of Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lublin to stay indoors. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a notice closing four Polish airports, including Warsaw’s main Chopin Airport and the key aid hub at Rzeszów–Jasionka, due to “unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security.”
The incident follows a similar, though less serious, violation just days earlier, when two Russian drones briefly entered Polish airspace. However, the decision to engage the drones and fire on them represents a new level of military response from Warsaw. The military said that the use of weapons was necessary to protect the country’s security and to prevent a repeat of the 2022 incident in which a stray missile killed two Polish civilians.
While the number of drones shot down and the extent of the damage are not yet known, the confrontation sends a clear message. Poland and NATO will not tolerate repeated violations of their airspace. The incident is a major test of NATO’s commitment to collective defense and puts the entire region on a knife’s edge, with the potential for further military escalation in the coming days.
