A ballistic munition launched from Iran and entering Turkish airspace was intercepted and destroyed by NATO air and missile defense systems, according to the Turkish Ministry of National Defense.
The interception occurred in the Eastern Mediterranean region, where NATO missile defense assets are deployed to protect allied territory and military infrastructure. Turkish officials confirmed that the projectile was neutralized shortly after entering Türkiye’s airspace.
Sirens In Southern Turkey
The announcement followed reports that air raid sirens sounded in the southern Turkish city of Adana around 03:00 local time, lasting approximately five minutes.
Local sources indicated that the incoming projectile may have been heading toward Incirlik Air Base, a key NATO installation that hosts U.S. forces and serves as a strategic hub for regional military operations.
However, Turkish authorities did not confirm the intended target of the missile or the precise interception location. Officials stated that discussions with the relevant countries involved are ongoing and that developments are being closely monitored with national security as the priority.
Third Missile Incident In March
This interception marks the third Iranian projectile incident involving Turkish airspace in March.
According to Turkish officials, two previous missiles fired toward Türkiye on March 4 and March 9 were also intercepted by NATO security systems, reflecting rising regional tensions as the conflict involving Iran expands across the Middle East.
NATO Missile Defense Response
The Turkish ministry emphasized that the interception was carried out using NATO air and missile defense systems, highlighting the alliance’s coordinated defense posture across the region.
In a statement following the incident, NATO said:
“NATO remains ready to defend against any threat coming from any direction.”
The alliance added that operational details could not be disclosed, but confirmed that NATO continues adapting its ballistic missile defense system to evolving threats.
Strategic Importance Of Incirlik Air Base
The possible connection to Incirlik Air Base drew particular attention because the installation is one of NATO’s most strategically important military facilities in the Middle East.
Located in southern Türkiye, the base hosts U.S. and NATO forces and has played a major role in regional operations for decades, including missions across Syria, Iraq, and the broader Middle East.
Because of its strategic importance, any missile activity directed toward Turkish airspace near Incirlik raises significant concern among NATO members, particularly amid the ongoing regional escalation involving Iran.
The incident underscores the expanding geographic scope of the conflict, as missile threats increasingly affect NATO territory and allied military infrastructure.
