Israel Vows ‘Heavy Price’ After Hamas Attack on IDF Soldiers Shatters Ceasefire Calm

The fragile peace established in the Gaza Strip came under severe pressure today after an attack on Israeli soldiers by Hamas forces prompted an immediate and forceful military response from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). The violation of the ceasefire, which is less than a week old, has drawn a fiery rebuke from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, who vowed a significant escalation if the attacks do not cease.
The incident highlights the immense fragility of the U.S.-brokered truce and the deep challenges facing the Phase Two negotiations, which aim to secure a long-term peace.
The Incident: Attack on IDF in Rafah
The clashes erupted in the Rafah area of Southern Gaza, where the IDF maintains a presence in line with the Phase One agreement’s partial withdrawal.
◦ Hamas Action: Israeli military sources reported that “terror operatives” emerged from a tunnel in southern Gaza and opened fire on IDF troops who were conducting operations to dismantle terrorist infrastructure in the area. The attack reportedly involved anti-tank missiles and small arms fire.
