A U.S. official has confirmed that a plot by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to assassinate Israel’s ambassador to Mexico was “contained” earlier this year. The statement, made on Friday, November 7, 2025, is the first official confirmation of the covert operation.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the IRGC-backed plot targeting Ambassador Einat Kranz-Neiger was active from late 2024 through the first half of 2025, an timeframe which includes this past summer. The official declined to provide specific details on how the plot was foiled or which security agencies were involved, but emphasized that it “does not pose a current threat.”
This revelation is the latest in a series of confirmed Iranian plots targeting Israeli, U.S., and Jewish interests globally. The U.S. official noted that this assassination attempt is part of a “long history of Iran’s global lethal targeting of diplomats, journalists, dissidents, and anyone who disagrees with them.”
The confirmation follows a pattern of similar operations. Security services in the United Kingdom and Sweden have recently warned that Tehran is increasingly using criminal proxies and organized crime networks to carry out attacks in Europe, allowing the regime to maintain deniability. Last month, Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency identified a senior IRGC Quds Force commander it alleged was behind a series of thwarted attacks on Jewish and Israeli targets in Australia, Greece, and Germany during 2024 and 2025.
The U.S. official’s statement today frames the foiled plot in Mexico as another example of this shadow war, warning that “every country where there is an Iranian presence” should be concerned.
