At least six French soldiers were injured in an attack on a military base near Erbil in northern Iraq, according to the governor of Erbil. The strike reportedly targeted a joint base used by French forces and Kurdish Peshmerga units.
Reports from Iraq indicate that the attack was carried out by Iran-backed militia factions, which have intensified strikes on coalition facilities since the escalation of the regional conflict. During the incident, a French military helicopter was reportedly hit, leading to injuries among the personnel stationed at the base.
The wounded soldiers were transported for medical treatment, though officials have not released detailed information about the severity of their injuries.
Following the attack, French forces reportedly imposed a curfew in the surrounding area as security measures were tightened around the facility. The incident marks another strike against international forces operating in Iraq as tensions linked to the wider Iran-U.S.–Israel conflict continue to spill over into neighboring countries.
Coalition bases in Iraqi Kurdistan, including those near Erbil, have previously been targeted by drones and rockets launched by Iran-aligned militias, reflecting the growing regional scope of the conflict.
