The death toll in the horrific New Year’s Eve fire at the Crans-Montana ski resort has risen to 40, with Swiss authorities confirming that at least 115 others have been injured in what is now one of the country’s deadliest tragedies in modern history. The blaze, which consumed the popular Le Constellation bar shortly after midnight on January 1, 2026, has left the alpine community in shock, particularly given the young age of the victims.

According to Valais cantonal police, the vast majority of those killed or injured were in their teens and early 20s, a demographic that had flocked to the venue for its renowned New Year’s bash. “We are dealing with a catastrophe that has disproportionately affected young people,” stated Police Commander Frédéric Gisler. The identification process is being hampered by the severity of the burns, with forensic teams from across Switzerland flying in to assist.
Survivors have described a scene of absolute chaos. The fire reportedly started when a sparkler or flare attached to a champagne bottle ignited the dry wooden ceiling of the basement nightclub. Witnesses recounted how the flames spread “within seconds,” triggering a deadly stampede as hundreds of panic-stricken revelers attempted to flee through a single narrow exit and up a staircase. “It was a wall of fire,” said 16-year-old survivor Axel Clavier. “People were trampled. There was nowhere to go.”
Hospitals in Sion, Lausanne, and Geneva are currently overwhelmed with burn victims, many of whom remain in critical condition. The Italian Foreign Ministry has also confirmed that several of the deceased are foreign nationals, highlighting the international nature of the resort’s clientele.
As flags fly at half-mast across Switzerland, questions regarding safety standards are intensifying. Preliminary investigations suggest the venue may have been over capacity, and the use of pyrotechnics in such a confined, wooden space is a focal point of the criminal probe. For now, a town known for luxury and leisure is grappling with a nightmare that has claimed a generation of young lives.
