“Not Amateurs”: Drones Over Belgian Military Base Spark NATO Alert

The Belgian military is on high alert after a series of sophisticated drone incursions over a key army base, prompting the nation’s defense minister to state, “This was not the work of amateurs.” The incident at the Marche-en-Famenne military base, located in southern Belgium, is the latest in a string of airspace violations over sensitive NATO sites across Europe.
Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken confirmed that military guards spotted multiple unmanned aircraft hovering over “crucial parts” of the army brigade’s headquarters on Saturday evening, October 25, and again on the night of October 28. Francken described the event as a “clearly orchestrated operation” intended to gather intelligence on critical infrastructure.
In response, a joint investigation has been launched by Belgian police and the military’s General Intelligence and Security Service (ADIV). The incident is not isolated; it follows similar sightings earlier in the month over other Belgian military sites, including the Elsenborn camp near the German border, where 15 drones were reportedly detected.
This Belgian alert adds to a growing sense of paranoia across the continent, which is facing what appears to be a coordinated “stress test” of its air defenses. In recent weeks, a wave of mysterious drone activity has caused significant disruption:
* Germany: Munich Airport, the country’s second-largest, was shut down twice in early October due to drone sightings.

While no actor has claimed responsibility for the Belgian incursions, military officials, including Belgium’s Chief of Defence, have noted that the drones used are not commercial, off-the-shelf models and have pointed to such hybrid warfare tactics as a hallmark of Russian intelligence.
