Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati revealed that he had received a call from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, signaling serious American efforts to achieve a ceasefire amid the escalating conflict. Following a cabinet session at the Grand Serail, Mikati emphasized the U.S.‘s full solidarity with Lebanon and reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to implementing U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701. He announced that the government has tasked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with calling on the U.N. Security Council to push for an immediate ceasefire.
Mikati also stressed the urgent need to elect a president for Lebanon, urging all political factions to work towards resolving this impasse. Additionally, he condemned the recent attack on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), calling it a violation of international law and Lebanon’s sovereignty.
The Lebanese government is also preparing for the upcoming Paris conference on October 24, with a focus on the necessity of achieving a swift ceasefire and addressing various pressing issues.
